Brewery News April 2024

JOIN FREE STATE FOR TRAILS THAT CONNECT US

Groups and individuals will gather to celebrate our heritage of outdoor opportunities in Lawrence on Thursday, April 25, from 5 to 8pm. Free State’s Eastside Brewery will host Trails that Connect Us, a free evening event along the Burroughs Trail, 19th and Moodie Road. You’ll find beer, food, music, a brewery open house, activities, and numerous features on local trails and activities. Share memories and tales with other explorers and gather insights on new adventures in Douglas County. Our location offers easy access from the Burroughs trail, so we encourage cycling or walking. Free valet bike parking will be provided!

The evening is also a fine connection to Kansas Craft Beer Week.

(Rain date is April 26.)

HOT TIMES IN THE HEARTLAND

As extreme weather events continue around the globe, a new documentary focusing on the local impact of climate change will show at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. Local filmmaker Dave Kendall, of Prairie Hollow Productions, and Rex Buchanan collaborated on this project. Their documentary, “Hot Times in the Heartland, ” will have a free screening on Thursday, April 4 at 7pm at Liberty Hall. A follow-up discussion with the filmmakers and several participants will wrap up the evening. Hope to see you there.

GRAVEL CITY KOLSCH

The iconic Kansas challenge! Free State Brewery celebrates the great spirit of the UNBOUND Gravel bicycle race with a limited-release beer. The Gravel City Kolsch is our tribute to the adventurousness and dedication of the riders and the crew who have made this race through the Kansas Flint Hills one of the premier endurance events in America. Riders from every state in the US, 6 Canadian provinces and 12 nations will test themselves with this challenging 200-mile race over gravel and dirt roads on June 3. This Gravel City Kolsch will await them at the finish line.

Now you can enjoy this fest beer in cans. The Kolsch-style beer is a German classic, using an extended period of lagering. The result is a crisp, refreshing, light-bodied, slightly hoppy, straw-colored beer. German Saphir hops contribute a subtle spiciness and herbal edge. The Gravel City Kolsch is a great session beverage for Midwest enjoyment. You’ll find Gravel City in select retail stores!

RESTAURANT REFRESHER DATES

Twice a year we close the restaurant for a couple of days to undertake painting and equipment installation and repair projects that are too significant to attempt while we’re open to customers. We’ll be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23 and 24, and will reopen for lunch at 11am on Thursday, April 25.

CRAFT BREWERS EXPOSITION

A sincere thanks to all the volunteers, brewers, and participants who combined to make the Kansas Craft Brewers Expo earlier this month a great event. It was a truly enjoyable gathering!
